What if you could take your book beyond Amazon and use it to build a passive income empire?

In 2018, none of my books were bestsellers, and I was making about $50/month in royalties.

I wanted more.

I set a goal of $6,000/month in royalties and sales from my books and courses. That would be $72,000/year—enough to cover all my expenses at the time.

In 2018, I did exactly bupkis. But in 2019, I released a new book outside of Amazon, and I made $83,234.50 in passive income. (I didn’t even start until May!)

The next year, I made over $230,000. I also launched my Amazon book to #1 bestseller in 8 categories in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Being a bestseller is great. Building a business from my books and e-products is even better.

How does that work?

You start with something you know. In my case, it was self-publishing.

You write a book about it. (A short one.)

You create one or two online products based on the same materials. And you sell them.

The book gets launched on Amazon, making you a bestselling author.

And the e-products make you money.

Here’s the Secret.

Your book on Amazon gets people ready to buy your products and services. It helps you build your community. It spreads the word, establishes your expertise, and sends you traffic and leads.

Your e-product makes you money and builds your community even more. And the people who aren’t ready to invest at that level? Some of them will check you out on Amazon and buy your book to get a taste.

After all, someone may not be ready to invest hundreds or thousands with you yet. But $5 or $10? Sure.

So they pick up your book. They get to know you. They learn what you do. They respect you.

They come to like you. And they want more.

And those are the best people to work with, because they’re already bought in before they ever talk to you.

Your book feeds your service and products. Your service and product drive book sales. Win-win!

There are three main parts to a successful author business. And you only need two of ‘em.

  • A bestselling book
  • A high-ticket service (such as ghostwriting, editing, coaching, or consulting)
  • Products (such as e-courses, membership programs, subscriptions, or merchandise)

Personally, I started with a service. That’s how I made my living. Then I created a couple of products to replace my income, so I didn’t have to work so hard all the time. Then I launched my book to bestseller.

For people who already have a thriving service, it makes sense to add a bestselling book to bring in leads for your business automatically, then add products for passive income.

If you’re where I was—you already have a book on Amazon and it’s not making you much money—you could offer a service next, or you could create a product based on your book.

Whichever order you do it in, the result is the same.

  • The gratification of doing creative work, helping people, and making a living doing what you love
  • The freedom of setting your own hours, choosing your own projects, and listening to your own inspiration
  • The exhilaration of controlling your own destiny

Not to mention the priceless moment when your passive income surpasses the income you used to work so hard for. Stand on a mountain peak, spin around with your arms out, and belt out your favorite song. Then pop open the champagne. Life is a game and you just won!

Bonus: you don’t have to wear pants to work anymore.

Seriously, this is all more important than it may seem. Here’s how it’s mattered for me.

  • When my boyfriend was diagnosed with cancer, I went with him for all his treatments. There’s no way I could have done that if I had still had a job. With my business, my work fit itself around his needs and mine—not vice versa.
  • When I struggled with mental health issues for most of a year, my products kept selling themselves and supporting me. Even when I was barely doing anything, that “bad” year still brought in six figures—more than I made at my old job.
  • When the pandemic hit, my business was flexible and agile enough to easily adapt and keep thriving through all the fear, uncertainty, economic pressure, and changing landscape.

You’re an author. You do great work. You deserve to make a living from it.

If you’ve envied other authors who seem to have it all…

Wildly successful launches…
Loyal communities of raving fans…
Time and freedom to focus on their next project…
Oh yeah, and plenty of money to go with it…

You’re not alone.

Those authors are no more worthy or special than you are.

This level of success is available for you, too.

You just need to learn how to build it.

[Cara]

Meet Cara.

Cara Stein is an idealist who has stopped trying to play it cool. She believes the only reason people don’t like business or marketing is that they don’t know how to do it well—yet. She's often praised for her no-bullshit style and her wry humor.

Cara is a Certified Professional Coach. She’s been helping people finish and publish their books since 2012. She’s guided over 200 books through the publishing process. She’s also the #1 international bestselling author of five books of her own, including How to be Happy (No Fairy Dust or Moonbeams Required), Getting Unstuck, and Finish and Publish: Write the Book You’ve Always Wanted to Write. Her peeves include chipmunks, fakery, and the word “peeve.”
